Towns and neighbourhoods remain stubbornly divided along social, spatial and economic lines is widely acknowledged, yet cultural life is rich and vibrant despite these challenges. Local knowledge and stories are often ignored in planning and development processes. Many opportunities for social connection and economic opportunity are missed if the cultural life in places is neglected. Arts-based research has been increasingly recognised as a powerful way to catalyse dialogue and positive change.

LIGHT PLACE is anon-profit organisation that uses public arts-based processes to illuminate place by engaging with socio-economic and spatial inequalities. Rooted in local communities, we use creative research and practices for inclusive, collaborative, and creative approaches to justice, resilience, and economic opportunity.

LIGHT PLACE’s goals are to uncover and collect local stories to preserve, amplify, and mobilise local and everyday knowledge; use public arts-based methods to create platforms for diverse community connection while generating and sharing local knowledge in imaginative ways; and develop contextually specific organisational forms and processes that support collective responsibility and foster enduring socio-economic and spatial impact.
